Harness the Power of a Nudge Unit
Creating a Nudge Unit for Your Organisation
While having an understanding of the fundamentals of behavioural science and nudges is critical, ongoing implementation and thorough measurement of effective behavioural nudges in your organisation is a huge undertaking. To do this most effectively, you will need a nudge unit. There are two main approaches to harnessing the power of a nudge unit: (1) develop your own internal nudge unit or (2) outsource your nudge unit.
“Future Minds Lab opened our eyes to the many important possibilities and opportunities a deeper understanding of human behaviour, neuroscience and nudges can offer to business.”

Developing Your Own Nudge Unit
Developing your own nudge unit is one approach to harnessing the full value of behavioural nudges. Development of a nudge unit typically takes organisations 2-5 years and at least 3-5 full-time employees. For most organisations, the required resources and time are simply not possible, which is why this approach is generally not recommended by McKinsey & Co.
However, for those companies willing to commit the resources, bringing on an expert transition partner can be the ideal way to bolster your unit’s expertise in the early stages, reduce setup time, leverage the respect of academic rigour, ensure optimal integration into your organisation, and safeguard your investment. The UNSW Future Minds Lab team provides consulting and expertise for initial nudge unit set-up for organisations willing and ready to resource their own nudge unit.
For organisations willing and prepared to invest in their own nudge unit, our typical “unit setup” consulting engagement looks like this:
Learn the basics of behavioural science
Experience what optimal nudge implementations look and feel like
Initial Nudge Development:
Phase 1 – Understanding your organisation needs
Phase 2 – Designing and developing initial customised nudges for your organisation
Phase 3 – Supporting you to implement your customised nudges & Assisting with the development of rigorous measurement protocols
Outsourcing Your Nudge Unit
Outsourcing your nudge unit to experts is often the best approach for many organisations since it provides immediate expertise and skips the heavy up-front investment of building your own internal team. McKinsey & Co highly recommends this approach, especially when this expertise come from an academic background.
The UNSW Future Minds Lab team works with you to identify and scope optimal nudges, ensure proper implementation of those nudges, and successfully measure and adjust those implementations to meet the needs of your organisation. This type of engagement is designed specifically for your organisation’s needs, targeting the areas that will deliver the most valuable outcomes.
Our typical collaborative, ongoing engagement looks like this:
Learn the basics of Behavioural Science
Experience what optimal implementations look and feel like
Integrated, Iterative Nudge Development:
Phase 1 – Understanding your organisation needs
Phase 2 – Designing and developing customised nudges for your organisation
Phase 3 – Implementing your customised nudges & Baseline measurements (using Agile Science)
Phase 4 – Reviewing the implementation & Continuing measurement (using Agile Science)
Phase 5 – Adjusting current nudges based on feedback & Commencing work on the next set of customised nudges
The Middle Ground
In some cases, your organisation needs something in between these two main approaches to harnessing the power of a nudge unit: outsourcing some but not all of your nudge unit. We understand that organisations’ needs vary and we are happy to discuss the best fit for you.
In these kinds of engagements, we typically find organisations seek help with the measurement and feedback element, since fast, agile and rigorous measurement that clearly demonstrates ROI can be highly challenging. Our team is happy to work with you to find the best approach for your organisation’s needs–after all, we are world leaders, specialising in Agile Science.
All of our engagements are tailored to your unique situation. In any of our engagements we use the needs of your organisation to determine how many days are required for each phase and provide a clear and predetermined cost per day.
There was once a time when humans were believed to behave fully rationally, carefully and objectively weighing up all the available evidence before making decisions. Not surprisingly, a large body of evidence shows that this is not the case. Humans are predictably irrational–prone to bias and incorrect judgements–sometimes we are aware of these, but often we are not.
Understanding and harnessing humans’ predictable irrationality is key to your organisation’s ongoing success as we head into the 4th Industrial Revolution. Organisations, researchers and governments around the world are finding that nudges really work. Don’t get left behind!
